CHILDHOOD EYE DISEASE & OCULAR INFECTIONS (3403)

AIM
To know and evaluate the alternative preventive and therapeutic control strategies for causes of childhood blindness/visual loss, and blinding ocular infections, with emphasis on the students' own work situations.
OBJECTIVES
By the end of this module the student should be able to:
- describe the aetiology and risk factors of childhood visual loss and blindness and ocular infections;
- plan a specific needs assessment for childhood visual loss and blindness and ocular infections;
- critically evaluate preventive and therapeutic strategies for the control of childhood visual loss and blindness (e.g. corneal scarring, retinopathy of prematurity, cataract, refractive errors) and ocular infections (e.g. trachoma, onchocerciasis, leprosy, and infective keratitis).
CONSTITUENCY
This module is compulsory for all MSc Community Eye Health students.
CONCEPTUAL OUTLINE
This module will focus on control strategies to reduce visual loss and blindness in children, and strategies to control ocular infections as part of the global VISION 2020 initiative.
TEACHING STRATEGY
A combination of interactive seminars, group work, discussion and student presentations will be used. There will also be a visit to a school for the blind.
LEARNING TIME
The module is made up of 150 Notional Learning Hours – 73.5 hours contact time, 15 hours directed self-study, 34.5 hours self-directed learning, and 27 hours assessment, review and revision.
ASSESSMENT
Coursework - students will select one cause of childhood visual loss and one ocular infection relevant to their own situation, and write an essay on how to implement control strategies.
FEE
£1,600 for each module including access to LSHTM library and learning resources, study materials and assessment.
