Course Outline
The primary purposes of the course, will be to familiarise participants with:
- The main causes of blindness in the world
- The clinical presentation and management of the following diseases:
- Trachoma
- Onchocerciasis
- Vitamin A deficiency and Measles
- Ophthalmia neonatorum
- HIV and the eye
- Leprosy
The workshop programme will also introduce participants to the Global Health VISION 2020 Initiative and its implementation through the VISION 2020: the Right to Sight programme. Eighty percent of blindness in the world is from treatable or preventable causes. The VISION 2020: the Right to Sight Global Initiative is to create adequate eye-care facilities within communities, particularly in underprivileged areas; to develop human resources so well-trained eye-care workers are available; and to implement specific programmes to control the major causes of blindness.
The course will be taught by staff of the International Centre for Eye Health in the Department of Infectious and Tropical Diseases. A comprehensive manual will be provided to accompany the presentations.
Who should apply for this course?
This three day course is aimed primarily at ophthalmologists both in the UK and overseas wishing to gain more information on eye diseases found in the tropics.
Methods of assessment
There is no formal assessment but at the conclusion of the course, a certificate of attendance will be provided.
Accreditation
CPD Accreditation from the Royal College of Ophthalmologists under category B for 18 points.
