Infectious Diseases in Humanitarian Emergencies

Aims 


This course is designed for those working in public health or related disciplines in developing countries, who have an interest and experience of infectious disease management in humanitarian emergencies and who would like to improve their skills or update their knowledge to support implementation of infectious disease projects and programmes in emergency settings.

Course objectives are to:

  • Review epidemiology of infectious diseases in humanitarian emergencies (conflict and natural disasters);
    consider the challenges of implementing infectious disease programmes in emergencies;
  • Describe concepts in infectious disease risk assessment in emergencies;
  • Examine concepts in design and implementation of early warning/surveillance systems in emergencies;
  • Review principles of outbreak investigation and management, including laboratory, media and communication, social mobilization, and infection control;
  • Explore strategies in the prevention and control of key infectious diseases in emergencies.

This course is jointly organized by LSHTM and the World Health Organization (WHO), the directing and coordinating authority for health within the United Nations system. WHO is responsible for providing leadership on global health matters, shaping the health research agenda, setting norms and standards, articulating evidence-based policy options, providing technical support to countries and monitoring and assessing health trends.

Course Setting and Outline


The course will run for 5 days from 26 – 30 March 2012. It will cover:

  • epidemiological concepts and indicators
  • infectious disease epidemiology
  • risk assessments and disease surveillance
  • outbreak investigation and response
  • infection control
  • social mobilization, media and communication
  • epidemiology and control of key diseases in emergencies (e.g. diarrhoeal disease, acute respiratory infections, malaria, tuberculosis, HIV, vaccine-preventable diseases such as measles and meningitis)


Teaching Methods and Course Materials


Teaching will be through a mixture of lectures, cases studies, group exercises, discussions and practical sessions.


Accreditation


Certificates of attendance will be provided to participants based on full participation during all sessions


Course fee


The cost for the five-day programme will be £415. This covers course participation, course materials, and tea/coffee, but does not cover travel or accommodation. The full course fee is payable by 15 February 2012.


Accommodation


LSHTM cannot provide accommodation for participants. A list of hotels and other accommodation located near the School is available, on request, from the LSHTM Registry.
