Pre-sessional English for Academic Purposes (EAP)

Pre-sessional English courses for the 2012/13 Academic Year

LSHTM has joined up with Birkbeck College to offer Pre-sessional English for Academic Purposes classes for applicants holding an unconditional offer of study from LSHTM (at Masters or Research level). The course is aimed at students who want to build their confidence before beginning their studies in the UK.

About Birkbeck College

Like LSHTM, Birkbeck College is one of the institutions of the University of London.  It is a large, multi-faculty institution offering a range of courses, and undertaking extensive research.  More information about Birkbeck can be found on their website here.  Birkbeck is conveniently situated in Bloomsbury, in the heart of London’s academic community, just across the road from LSHTM.

Conditions of application

Students must have an offer of a place at LSHTM (MSc, DrPH or PhD) before applying to Birkbeck. You should send proof of your offer to Birkbeck with your application form.

Students requiring a Tier 4 Student Visa

The UK Border Agency (UKBA) has agreed that students coming to study Pre-sessional English for Academic Purposes at Birkbeck College, followed by an MSc or Research Degree (September start) at LSHTM can apply for one visa to cover both courses.

To study the Pre-sessional English course followed by a main course of study at LSHTM, students must provide evidence of English which meets the UK Border Agency's requirements.

We will soon be uploading some guidance to help applicants fill in the visa application form. Please contact Frankie Edwards the Student Adviser if you need any advice about making a Tier 4 application.

LSHTM Minimum English language score condition

Please note that if you are required to provide LSHTM with evidence of a sufficient score in an approved English language test, attendance at these EAP classes does not change this requirement.

If you need to apply for a Tier 4 visa and you need to show evidence of your English language as part of your LSHTM course offer, then you must send evidence of your score to Birkbeck with your application form for the pre-sessional course. Further details of LSHTM's minimum English language requirements and a list of the English language tests accepted by Admissions can be found via www.lshtm.ac.uk/applicants (see Offer of Admission).

If you need to apply for a Tier 4 visa but for some reason you do not need to show evidence of your English to meet the conditions of your LSHTM offer, then you will still have to show proof of English to the UKBA when you make a visa application. This means that you will need to submit evidence of being at least B1 level in English language, using one of the Secure English Language Tests (or SELT).
