Higher Education Academy (HEA)

INTRODUCTION
The Higher Education Academy (HEA) was formed in May 2004 from a merger of the Institute for Learning and Teaching in Higher Education (ILTHE), the Learning and Teaching Support Network (LTSN), and the TQEF National Co-ordination Team (NCT). The work of the Academy focuses on: INDIVIDUAL ENTRY ROUTE This route is primarily intended for experienced staff. The application forms and guidance notes have been amended to align with the UK Professional Standards Framework for teaching in higher education. These changes are an interim measure pending implementation of the new approach to professional recognition in 2007. Experienced staff (3 years teaching experience or more) can apply for membership through the Individual Entry Route, which used to be known as the fast-track route. Staff need to fill in an application form, and write a reflective analysis on 6 aspects of their teaching: teaching and the support of learning, contribution to the design and planning of learning activities and/or programmes of study, assessment and feedback to learners, developing effective learning environments and learner support, evaluating your practice and personal development and integration of scholarship, research and professional activities with teaching and supporting learning. Staff are supported in making their applications through the provision of guidance notes (from HEA), examples of successful applications, and workshop support, where staff are helped to write their reflective analyses (half day workshop run by Judy McKimm). To apply Associate Practitioner Application Form - September 2006 (Individual Entry Route) Registered Practitioner Application Form - September 2006 (Individual Entry Route) Application Process Guidance Notes - September 2006 (Individual Entry Route) Guidance Notes for Referees - September 2006 (Individual Entry Route) Criteria used by the accreditors to assess applications - September 2006 ACCREDITED PROGRAMME ROUTE FOR MEMBERSHIP Staff may also apply through the Accredited Programme Route for Membership. This is for staff who have completed an HEA-accredited certificate programme in teaching and learning support in higher education, such as PATHE (Professional Accreditation of Teaching in Higher Education) at the Institute of Education or PGCAP (Post-Graduate Certificate in Academic Practice) at Queen Mary College, London. A shorter form needs to be completed (see below). The new School Certificate in Learning and Teaching (CILT) has been designed with a view to HEA accreditation. The School is already in discussions with the HEA regarding this and an accreditation visit will be organised at the appropriate stage. To apply Accredited
programme route application form Completed forms should be submitted via the Staff and Educational Development Team (Personnel and Payroll Office) so that (i) the payment details can be included (ii) the School can pay the fees (iii) the form can be checked for completeness, and (iv) appropriate records can be kept. COLLABORATIVE AGREEMENTS The Academy has collaborative agreements with a number of professional bodies and subject associations (such as the General Teaching Councils for England, Scotland and Wales). These agreements recognise the equivalence of qualifications and accreditation awarded by other professional bodies to staff teaching or supporting learning in HE. You can access the list of current collaborative agreements and relevant application forms via this link.
