Course Outline
The primary purposes of the workshop (which will parallel closely the
expanding workshop programme currently underway in about thirty countries
in Africa, Asia and Latin America) will be to familiarise participants
with:
- the aims, objectives and strategies of the VISION 2020: the Right
to Sight programme.
- the planning principles involved in establishing community eye health
programmes for the control of avoidable blindness to population clusters
of around 1 million in developing countries.
Setting & Programme
The course programme will look at needs assessment at the community
level and practical issues involved in the treatment of the major blinding
diseases. Time will be allocated to group work producing
and presenting VISION 2020 proposals for a target population.
Teaching Methods The course will be taught by staff of the International Centre for Eye Health in the Department of Infectious
& Tropical Diseases, with experience of workshop delivery in community
eye health in many parts of the developing world, will give instruction
on the course. A comprehensive manual will be provided to accompany
the presentations.
Methods of assessment
There is no formal assessment but at the conclusion of the course,
a certificate of attendance will be provided.
Accreditation
CPD accreditation from the Royal College of Ophthalmologists under category B.
Who should apply for this course?
This five-day course is aimed primarily at ophthalmologists and eye
health programme managers working towards the VISION 2020 goal of elimination
of avoidable blindness by the year 2020.
