Factor Analysis and Structural Equation Modelling:

An introduction using Stata and Mplus

Dates & fees for 2011 will be posted here as soon as they are confirmed. Please check periodically for updates.

Course outline

Most courses on factor analysis and structural equation modelling concentrate on the use of traditional factor analytic models with interval level data and neglect the latest developments within the Generalised Latent Variable Modelling framework. The course will discuss the current state of the art with respect to factor analysis and structural equation modelling, while retaining a practical focus. Participants will acquire awareness of the new available methods and gain competence in applying and combining these in simple settings.

Who Should Attend

Participants are expected to be applied statisticians, social scientists and epidemiologists with an interest in factor analysis and structural equation modelling. Familiarity with regression models would be an advantage.

Course Content

By the end of the course participants will be able to:

-Understand measurement principles such as reliability and precision
-Perform Exploratory Factor Analysis and Confirmatory Factor Analysis with a mixture of binary/ordinal/interval data.
-Estimate and interpret path analytic and structural models
-Estimate and interpret growth curve and latent class models
-Develop awareness of the common threads across these methods
-Gain practical experience in using these methods using Mplus and Stata

Teaching Methods and Course Materials

All teaching is carried out at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine nearby and consists of a combination of formal lectures and computer practicals. Comprehensive course notes will be given to participants at the start of the course.

Methods of Assessment

Each participant will receive a certificate of attendance. There is no formal assessment.

Course Fee

The total course fee is £600, which covers participation in the course materials and incidental tea and coffee, but does not cover travel costs, accommodation and meals. If the course fee is to be paid on the applicant's behalf, please send a letter from the sponsor to confirm this as soon as possible. Otherwise, the applicant will be held personally responsible for payment. Fees are payable in full by 15th January 2010

Accommodation & Meals

Unfortunately, we are not able to arrange travel and accommodation for course participants. However, a list of local hotels and student accommodation is available from Registry.

Lunch can be purchased from the School refectory. Evening meals are not catered for at the School, but there is a large choice of restaurants and coffee shops nearby.
