Infectious Diseases in Humanitarian Emergencies

Course outline

This course is jointly organized with the World Health Organization (WHO).
The World Health Organization is the directing and coordinating authority for global health within the United Nations system. It is responsible for providing leadership on global health matters, shaping the health research agenda, setting norms and standards, articulating evidence-based policy options, providing technical support to countries and monitoring and assessing health trends.

Aims of the course

This course is designed for those working in public health or related disciplines in developing countries, who have an interest and experience of infectious disease management in humanitarian emergencies and who would like to improve their skills or bring their knowledge up to date to support implementation of infectious disease projects/programmes in emergency settings.
The objectives are:

  • To review epidemiology of infectious diseases in humanitarian emergencies (conflict and natural disasters);
  • To explore the challenges of implementing infectious disease programmes in emergencies;
  • To explore concepts in infectious disease risk assessment in emergencies;
  • To review in depth the concepts in design and implementation of early warning/surveillance systems in emergencies;
  • To review principles of outbreak investigation and outbreak management, including laboratory, media and communication, social mobilization, and infection control;
  • To explore strategies in the prevention and control of key infectious diseases in emergencies.

Setting and Programme

The course will run for 5 days from 12 to 16 April 2010. Day 1 will introduce concepts and epidemiological indicators, review infectious disease epidemiology, conducting risk assessments and disease surveillance. Day 2 will cover outbreak investigation and response. Day 3 will cover infection control, social mobilization, media and communication. Days 4-5 will cover the epidemiology of specific diseases (diarrhoeal diseases, acute respiratory infections, malaria, tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS, vaccine-preventable diseases such as measles and meningitis, pandemic influenza), and practical strategies for their prevention and control in emergencies.

Teaching Methods and Course Materials


Teaching will be through a mixture of lectures, cases studies, group exercises, discussions and practicals (including how to put on and remove personal protective equipment, how to use rapid diagnostic tests).

Certificates of attendance will be provided to participants

Course fee

The cost for the five-day programme will be £375. The fee covers participation in the course, course materials, tea/coffee, but does not cover travel nor accommodation. The full course fee is payable by 01 March 2010.

Accommodation

The School cannot provide accommodation for participants. A list of hotels and other accommodation located in the vicinity of the School can be obtained, on request, from the Registry.
