School Scholarships open to those holding an offer of admission for the 2008-09 academic session

Mansfield Aders Scholarship Award and The Avebury Memorial Fund Award

Who is eligible (criteria for being considered): All candidates to the MSc Biology & Control of Disease Vectors and MSc Medical Parasitology who hold an offer of admission. Eligible applicants assessed as Home for tuition fee purposes and hold an offer of admission will be considered automatically.

How to apply: Eligible applicants will automatically be considered.

Decision date: May 2008

Value of award: One award of £3,000 towards tuition fees is available this year.

Lt Col Henry Kirkpatrick Scholarship

Who is eligible (criteria for being considered): Open to suitably qualified applicants who hold an offer for full-time MSc Community Eye Health or research courses in opthalmology and is awarded for the duration of the studies (maximum of three years).

Value of award: One award to cover full tuition fees and £10,000 towards maintenance costs is available this year.

 

School Scholarships open to students registered for the 2007-08 academic session

Helena Vrbova Scholarship

Dr Helena Vrbova died tragically in Papua New Guinea In 1982, at the age of 29, where she was involved in research in malaria. The scholarship will be used for students whose studies are directed towards malaria.

Who is eligible (criteria for being considered): Open to suitably qualified postgraduate research (PhD) or Masters (MSc) students whose research is directed towards malaria. Candidates will need to be full-time registered students at LSHTM.

Value of award: One award of £1,000 towards project costs was made last year is available this year.

Association of Physicians in Great Britain & Ireland

Who is eligible (criteria for being considered): Open to all MSc students undertaking primary data collection for their summer projects. Candidates will need to be a full-time registered student at LSHTM.

Value of award: One award of £1000 towards fieldwork costs.

Dr Gordon Smith Travelling Scholarship

Who is eligible (criteria for being considered): Applicants must be registered for a DrPH, PhD or exceptionally, an MSc course at the School. Applicants must be travelling to an institution in a developing country to undertake a research programme during the next academic session.

How to apply: A full application proposal shall be no longer than four A4 pages. It will include a background statement, a description of the work to be done, an account of the benefits to the student's future career, a description of the features of the institution being visited that make it a suitable venue and a budget. Applicants will also need to complete a Dr Gordon Smith Travelling Scholarship application form (PDF 72K). Completed forms should be submitted to the Registry.

Value of award: One award of £5,000 towards travel costs/expenses and necessary equipment and supplies is available this year.

Other information: The period of the award should be at least two months and the country visited must not be the home country of the scholar, neither will the institution be that at which the scholar was working prior to becoming a student. Upon return, the scholar will be required to give a seminar at the School and will be encouraged to publish the work in an appropriate journal and such publication will mention the support received from the scholarship. A brief report is also required by The Wellcome Trust. The research, seminar and report must be completed by September 2009 at the latest.

The Wellcome Trust: Postdoctoral Research Training Fellowship

Who is eligible (criteria for being considered): Awards are open for postdoctoral researchers, or medical students, of up to six years' research experience. Applications may be received from any country, except for the North American region where researchers are advised to approach funding agencies in their respective countries. The proposed research must be of relevance to less developed countries.

How to apply: Candidates should initially complete a preliminary application form and obtain a letter of support from the Head of Department, stating that the candidate will be able to return to his/her post following the training. The preliminary form and letter of support can be submitted at any time. Once the Trust has received the preliminary application, it will be assessed for eligibility of applicant, administering institute and the scientific proposal. If the preliminary details meet the scheme's requirements, a full application form will be sent for completion by the Trust.

Last date for applications: Full applications will be considered throughout the year and at least six months should be allowed between submission of full applications and the proposed start date.

Value of award: The candidate's age and experience, and the cost of living in the country in which the candidate will be working will determine salaries.

Departments holding Scholarships

Courses run by the School are not eligible for Local Education Authority awards and students are advised to seek alternative sources of financial support as early as possible. The following is a guide only.

The London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine is pleased to call for applications for one full (fees and stipend) and five fees-only studentships for the following internationally renowned courses:

MSc Demography & Health

Description: This course offers a broad training in the theories and methods of demography and the population sciences and their application to health, social welfare and economic development. Graduates pursue careers in academic or health-related research, public health, reproductive health and work with NGOs, UN/government statistical offices and a wide range of public and private sector bodies. Eligibility: UK/EU applicants must have an Upper Second Class Honours degree from a recognised university, or a degree in medicine, and must hold an offer of admission to MSc Demography & Health.

How to apply: Eligible applicants are considered upon request. Decisions are normally made in June so an early application is recommended

MSc Epidemiology

Description: This course aims to equip students with the knowledge and skills to make valuable contributions to both epidemiological research and public health. Graduates enter careers in medical research, public health and community medicine, epidemiological field studies, drug manufacturers, government or NGOs. Eligibility: UK/EU applicants should have good numeracy skills and an Upper Second Class Honours degree of a recognised university in science or related subject, or a degree in medicine.

How to apply: Eligible applicants holding an offer of admission to MSc Epidemiology before the end of June will be considered automatically. Decisions are normally made in June so an early application is recommended.

MSc Medical Statistics

Description: This course provides training in the theory and practice of statistics with special reference to clinical trials, epidemiology and clinical or laboratory research. Graduates pursue careers in various sectors including higher education, research institutions, the pharmaceutical industry, central government and national health services. Eligibility: UK/EU applicants should have an Upper Second Class Honours degree of a recognised university in science, or a related subject, or a degree in medicine. Applicants without a mathematically-based first degree must have strong quantitative skills and some familiarity with statistical ideas.

How to apply: Interested candidates should complete the MSc Application Forms, stating that they wish to be considered for this funding, and submit them to Registry. Applicants will normally be interviewed when submitting their application for admission and a decision made then. Early application is therefore recommended.

MSc Veterinary Epidemiology

The Royal Veterinary College is delighted to announce that they have four BBSRC scholarships (fees and stipend) for UK students wishing to study on the MSc Veterinary Epidemiology in 2007-08. Closing date for application is 1 June 2007. Further information

Wingate Scholarships

The scholarships are designed to help with costs of a specific project which may last up to 3 years. The average total of award us about £6,500 and the maximum in any one year is £10,000. Further details are available at their website: The Harold Hyam Wingate Foundation.

Medical Research Council (MRC)

Description: The MRC provide awards for taught Masters degrees and pay the tuition fee plus an additional sum to cover maintenance.

Eligibility: Applications are restricted to UK and European Union members and should hold or expect to hold a first class or upper second class honours degree. The courses that are eligible for MRC funding are MSc Demography & Health, Epidemiology and Medical Statistics.

How to apply: Applicants for these courses are considered automatically for these awards, but applicants should also clearly mark on their application if they wish to be considered for this scholarship. Decisions are normally made in May so an early application is recommended.

Alcohol & Education Research Council

The Alcohol Education and Research Council will award a small number of studentships for people working in the alcohol field, who wish to acquire appropriate professional qualifications by following a taught course. The purpose of the scheme is to encourage research in the alcohol field and to improve the quality of service provided for those with drinking problems. These objectives are very much within the aims of the Council. The closing date for the submission of applications for 2007-08 will 13 June 2007. Late applications will not be accepted. The Royal Society

Association of Medical Research Charities

AMRC maintains a searchable database of member charities.  The information held in the database provides general details about each member charity, as well as more specific research funding information.  Member charities provide regular updates on their activities. www.amrc.org.uk

Career Development Loans (CDL)

CDLs are operated on behalf of the Department of Employment by Barclays, The Co-operative and Royal Bank of Scotland. The loan can be used to cover up to 80 percent of course fees plus up to 100 percent of any related expenses. Please note that applications for Career Development Loans must be submitted to theRegistry, LSHTM, for certification before they will be considered. National Academic Awards from the British Federation of Women Graduates

Description: To promote women's opportunities in education and public life and to work for conditions in which women can combine careers and domestic responsibilities.

Eligibility: Female research students in their final year of study for a PhD degree. N.B.: MPhil students would need to be upgraded to a PhD by the deadline date.
