ERC Studentship

Department of Public Health and Policy

The London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine invites applications for a 3-year studentship to undertake a PhD in the area of Global Health Governance within the Department of Public Health & Policy. The project is funded by a 4-year European Research Council (ERC) Advanced Researcher Grant held jointly between Dr Kelley Lee of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and Professor Colin McInnes of Aberystwyth University. Dr. Lee will be the Primary Supervisor for this studentship and Professor McInnes the Secondary Supervisor. Opportunities will exist for a period of study at Aberystwyth University but the studentship will be based at LSHTM.

Research Programme

The research programme is entitled The Transformation of Global Health Governance: Competing World Views and Crises. As well as the two lead investigators, the programme employs four full-time research fellows, a second PhD student based at Aberystwyth University, and two part-time project administrators. The studentship

The successful applicant will be expected to make a contribution to the research programme as well as completing a PhD. The subject of the PhD must be within the general area of the programme, and in particular we would welcome applicants willing to work in the fields of: economism or biomedicalism in shaping the global governance of pandemic influenza or tobacco control. Applicants who do not possess recognised training in research methods will be expected to take such a course at LSHTM as part of their training.

Eligibility criteria


Applicants for this studentship must:
  • Hold a 1st or 2.1 university degree (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline (international relations/politics, public health)
  • Hold a Masters degree in Public Health or International Relations/Politics
  • Have demonstrated previous interest in global health governance through research or work experience
  • Have proven experience in writing up study results and findings in reports, guidelines, standard operating procedures or papers suitable for publication in peer-reviewed journals

It is desirable that applicants for this scholarship should have:

  • Have experience of qualitative methods notably key informant interviewing and document analysis
  • Have experience in advanced research skills (PG level or equivalent)
  • Have excellent written and oral communication skills in English
  • Have ability to work well independently and as part of a larger project team

Award

The studentship will cover course fees (at UK/EU rate) and a student stipend for three years. An additional £2000 per year will be provided to cover direct research costs and fieldwork.

Start Date

The studentship will commence on 1 October 2009.
