Anthropology, History and Sociology Group (AHS)

Group Head:  Dr Wenzel Geissler

Group Administrator:  Linda Amarfio

Social and Medical Anthropology are growing areas of interest and expertise within the School. Members of the group are all involved in ethnographic research around infectious disease (in particular HIV and malaria), therapeutic care and health systems in Africa & Asia.

A special emphasis is on ethnographic and historical research on bioscientific production and experimental intervention in Africa.  In relation to this most AHS group members collaborate in the research programme "Anthropologies of African Biosciences" (AAB), which is funded by the Leverhume Trust and the Wellcome Trust.  Other research projects are funded by Wellcome Trust, ESRC, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and the British Academy. For ongoing and planned projects within the Anthropologies of African Biosciences please click on the link above.

The AHS group organises a fortnightly Medical Anthropology Seminar Series that links with other anthropologists at the School as well as in other departments in London and elsewhere.
