Background
I started my career in the software industry but have worked in the Centre for Population Studies since 1980. My first degree is in social anthropology and I like to think of myself as a social scientist, although most of my work is in technical demography.
I am responsible for the taught course module on Population, Poverty and Environment. I also teach on the modules on Population Dynamics and Projections and Analysing Survey and Population Data.
Research
Research interests include methods for measuring adult mortality in developing countries, demographic and poverty dynamics, the social and demographic impact of the HIV/AIDS epidemic, and the demography of sub-Saharan Africa more generally, in particular that of South Africa.
