Background

I joined the School in October 2007 to become the team leader for the Maternal and Child Health Collaborative Research Programme of the Kintampo Health Research Centre (Ghana) and LSHTM. Therefore, I live and work in Ghana and only occasionaly visit the school.

The teaching activities consist of tutoring on the DL Epidemiology (EP103, EP201) course and supervising students during fieldwork.

The Collaborative Research Programme includes two major trials: The ObaapaVitA trial and the Newhints trial. The ObaapaVita trial studied the effect of weekly low-dose vitamin A supplementation on mortality and morbidity in women of child bearing age. Over 200,000 women have participated in this large cluster randomized, placebo controlled, double blind trial which ended in November 2008. The Newhints trial studies the effect of perinatal visits of trained volunteers to pregnant women and recently delivered women and their newborns with the aim of improving newborn care practice and reducing neonatal mortality. This study ends in March 2010.

Before I joined the School, I worked for almost 10 years at the Academic Medical Centre of the University of Amsterdam, the Netherlands, in the department of social medicine. I worked on evaluations of health services such as a genetic screening programme for Familial Hypercholestrolemia, the implementation of new clinical guidelines for rural health facilities in Nepal, and the development of a performance indicator framework for the Dutch health (care) system. I enjoy working "on the crossroads of epidemiology, health policy and health services research" and use qualitative and quantitative research methods in my daily work.

My professional and educational background includes professional training as a nurse, a Masters Degree in Health Sciences from Maastricht University, postgraduate training in epidemiology at Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam, and a PhD from the University of Amsterdam (2006) thesis titled Health Services Research at work for National Health Policy .
