Background

Carine is an epidemiologist with degrees in medicine, demography and epidemiology. She has been a member of the Maternal Programme since 1993 and of the Infectious Disease Epidemiology Unit since 2001.

Teaching

I organise the Intensive Course in Epidemiology and Statistics and I teach on the Basic Epidemiology Linear Unit, the Design and Analysis of Epidemiological Studies Study Unit, Reproductive and Sexual Health, Current Issues in Maternal and Child Health, and the Intensive Course in Epidemiology and Statistics.

Research

Her areas of interest include the methodological and conceptual aspects of the evaluation of Maternal and Perinatal Health Programmes, the measurement of maternal morbidity and mortality, examining the role of audits to improve the quality of obstetric care, and understanding the contribution of indirect causes including HIV to maternal mortality. She has extensive work experience in Asia (Bangladesh and Indonesia), and Africa (Benin, Chad, Ivory Coast, Morocco, Senegal). In 2008 she spent a year on study leave in China.  Carine has collaborated with a large number of agencies, including DFID, MotherCare, MSF ORSTOM, UNICEF, USAID and WHO.
