Background

I have worked at LSHTM since 2005 on a variety of topics related to the themes of armed confict and health and social determinants of health. Health outcomes of interest include mental health, sexual and reproductive health, and HIV/AIDS. My prior work included five years management experience of reproductive health and HIV/AIDS programmes in Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Uganda amongst others. I have also conducted consultancy work on forced migration and health.

Teaching

I teach on the Conflict and Health module, and give lectures on the Global Mental Health module and the Diploma in Tropical Nursing.

Research

I have a keen interest in social determinants of health in transitional and low-income settings. My current research focuses on long-term trends of population health as a consequence of socioeconomic transitions in the former Soviet Union. My previous work has included researching social determinants of physical and mental health of conflict-affected populations in northern Uganda and Southern Sudan; developing and validating a new method to estimate mortality with conflict-affected populations; and exploring the effects of humanitarian reform and financing approaches on the delivery of reproductive health services in confict-affected countries.
