BackgroundI have worked at LSHTM since 2005 on a variety of topics related to the themes of armed confict and health and social determinants of health. Health outcomes of interest include mental health, sexual and reproductive health, and HIV/AIDS. My prior work included five years management experience of reproductive health and HIV/AIDS programmes in Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Uganda amongst others. I have also conducted consultancy work on forced migration and health. TeachingI teach on the Conflict and Health module, and give lectures on the Global Mental Health module and the Diploma in Tropical Nursing. ResearchI have a keen interest in social determinants of health in transitional and low-income settings. My current research focuses on long-term trends of population health as a consequence of socioeconomic transitions in the former Soviet Union. My previous work has included researching social determinants of physical and mental health of conflict-affected populations in northern Uganda and Southern Sudan; developing and validating a new method to estimate mortality with conflict-affected populations; and exploring the effects of humanitarian reform and financing approaches on the delivery of reproductive health services in confict-affected countries.
