Background

I am a senior lecturer in epidemiology, with a focus in social epidemiology. My primary interest in recent years has been in the socioeconomic epidemiology of HIV/AIDS and Tuberculosis and in developing interventions to address these public health issues.

Teaching

I teach on a wide variety of courses. I co-organise a module in Social Epidemiology, give lectures on courses in Basic Epidemiology, the summer Intensive Courses in Epidemiology and Meidcal Statistics, AIDS, Health Promotion Theory and Principles and Practice of Health Promotion. I also contribute to teaching on the first term course Extended Epidemiology.

Research

In recent years I have published papers on educational attainment and socioeconomic status and their relationship to risk of HIV in Africa. More recently, I have been developing tools for the measurement of socio-economic factors in epidemiological research. In my current work I am a core member of the research team running the Intervention with Microfinance for AIDS and Gender Equity Study (IMAGE). This is a prospective 3 year, matched and randomised community intervention trial on the role of a community based poverty alleviation and gender empowerment programme in changing sexual behaviour and preventing HIV infection.
