Background
I became Director of the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine in January 2001, having previously been Professor of Primary Health Care and Director of the Department of Primary Care and Population Sciences, Royal Free and University College Medical School, and worked part-time as a general practitioner in North London.
I was formerly Director of Research & Development at the NHS Executive, North Thames, and have also worked internationally in Nepal, Jamaica, Canada and the USA.
Teaching
I lecture on the Public Health lecture series and the primary health care study unit of PHDC as well as on the DTM &H
Research
My research interests are in epidemiology and health services research focusing particularly on research in primary care and the study of environmental influences on health, including the potential effects of global environmental change. Previous research includes a number of randomised trials evaluating interventions to change patient and practitioner behaviour and the impact of information communication and technology.
I am on a number of major international and national committees including the Advisory Board of the National Institute of Health Research of England, the MRC Global Health Group and the MRC Strategy Group. I was formerly chair of the UUK Health and Social Care Policy Committee, a member of the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and of the WHO Advisory Committee on Health Research.
