Background

I trained initially as a physician specialising in infectious and tropical diseases and HIV medicine, and continue to work in HIV medicine in London. I studied epidemiology at LSHTM with particular interests in care for HIV-infected people in developing countries.

Teaching

I teach clinical tropical medicine, epidemiology and HIV/AIDS to wide range of students. From 1999-2003 I was Course Organiser for the MSc course in Tropical Medicine and International Health.

Research

My main research interest is care for people with HIV in developing countries, particularly preventive interventions. Currently major projects include a cluster randomised trial investigating the effect of community-wide TB preventive therapy among gold miners in South Africa, a component of the CREATE consortium, funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. In collaboration with colleagues in South Africa, I have been involved with the design, implementation and evaluation of an HIV care programme in workplace and community settings. I supervise PhD students working on adherence to antiretroviral therapy; second-line antiretroviral therapy in South Africa; the effect of antiretroviral therapy on households in Uganda; and missed opportunities in enrolling pregnant women into HIV care programmes.

I am an investigator on the DfID research programme consortium "Evidence for Action" on HIV treatment and care in resource-limited settings.

I did field work for my PhD on the clinical epidemiology of HIV disease at Projet RETRO-CI, Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire, where I was also involved in a study of the effect of cotrimoxazole on morbidity and mortality among people with HIV.
