Background

Phil is a senior lecturer and chartered statistician. After studying Mathematics and Statistics at Warwick University, he worked for a public services research consultancy based in Birmingham, UK. In 1994 he moved into academia to research injury epidemiology, first in Department of Child Health at Newcastle University, and then at Institute of Child Health at University College London. In 2001 he moved to London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine.

Phil is a co-organiser of the Term 1 foundation module ‘Statistics for Epidemiology and Population Health (STEPH)’. He also lectures on Sample Size, Sampling and Outcome Assessment for the Study Design module and for the Intensive Course in Epidemiology & Medical Statistics. Research

Phil’s research is in two areas: participation in research studies; and the epidemiology of injury. His research into methods to increase response to postal questionnaires has been widely cited. He has recently completed several research studies in child injury mortality and morbidity in England and Wales, and the links with deprivation, and is currently researching the relationship between road injury, deprivation and ethnicity in London. He also contributes to the team that co-ordinates the CRASH-2 trial of anti-fibrinolytic agents in patients at risk of serious haemorrhage.
