Background

My career has involved a long spell with the World Fertility Survey and shorter periods with the International Statistical Institute in Netherlands and with the Medical Department in Fiji. Joined the School in 1988 and appointed Professor of Medical Demography in 1993. I am currently nearing the end of my presidency of the International Union for the Scientific Study of Population (2006-9).

Teaching

I teach on Population Studies in term 1 and on the study unit ' Family Planning Programmes' and 'Population, Poverty and Environment' in Term 2. I also undertake a fair amount of overseas teaching and currently supervise three doctoral students.

Research

My longstanding research interests concern fertility, family planning and child health in developing countries. Current research studies include HIV prevention, contraceptive failure and discontinuation, and the sexual and reproductive health of young people
