Changes at the top for the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine

New post of Vice-Director created at leading postgraduate institution.

The London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine is pleased to announce the appointment of Professor Anne Mills to the newly-created position of Vice Director.

The internationally-renowned health economist is currently Head of the Faculty of Public Health & Policy and Professor of Health Economics and Policy at the School.

In her new post, Prof Mills will have broad responsibility for academic affairs, including formulating strategies to capitalise on research strengths and overseeing the School's REF submission. She will also advise and deputise for the Director, Professor Peter Piot. She will take up the position on 1 September, initially for five years.

Professor Mills, who has worked at the School since 1979, has researched and published widely in the fields of health economics and health systems in low and middle income countries. She is regularly called on to give top-level advice to governments and other agencies and has previously served on WHO's Commission on Macro-economics and Health.

Awarded a CBE for services to medicine in 2006, she was elected Fellow of the UK Academy of Medical Sciences in 2009 and is currently President Elect of the International Health Economics Association.

Professor Richard Smith, Professor of Health System Economics, will succeed Professor Mills as Head of Faculty.

Professor Mills said: "I am looking forward to taking up the position of Vice Director and helping to lead the School as it continues to grow and move forward. I have very much enjoyed being Head of Faculty and I wish Professor Smith all the best in the role."
