August 20th is World Mosquito Day, commemorating that date in 1897 when Sir Ronald Ross confirmed the Anopheles mosquito as the vector that carries malaria. This year's commemorations explore events in January 1912 when Sir Ronald arrived in St Petersburg on the Tsar's personal train as part of official delegation to the Russian Duma. Records and artefacts from the trip, which included a visit to the Russian Malaria Commission and several lavish banquets, are held by the Library and Archives Service at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine.
Through live performance and music and with help from current members of the School's Malaria Centre please join 'Sir Ronald & Lady Ross' and Binkie the Dog as we celebrate more than a century of efforts in malaria control from Ross’s eureka moment to the present day breakthrough in the hunt for the long-awaited malaria vaccine.
Doors open at 15:30. Prize for the best dressed guest.
