Professor Chris Curtis - Memoriam

Chris CurtisProfessor Chris Curtis, one of the world’s leading medical entomologists, has died unexpectedly. Dr Jo Lines, Chris's colleague, has written an obituary.

During Chris's short illness, messages of goodwill have been flooding in from colleagues and students all over the world. The huge volume of these messages, and the depth of feeling that they express, shows that there is a remarkably large community of people, scattered over the world, whose work and lives have been given lasting inspiration by Chris's kindness, integrity, compassion and commitment.

The family has requested that those wishing to remember Chris should not send flowers, but rather make donations to WaterAid. This can be done either directly to the charity by visiting their website http://www.wateraid.org/uk/donate/ or via a School collection being organised by Cheryl Whitehorn (and you can still gift aid your individual contribution - please contact Cheryl for details and a form: cheryl.whitehorn@lshtm.ac.uk )

Chris's funeral will be family-only. However, colleagues at LSHTM will be involved in planning an event to celebrate his life sometime in the future. Details will be posted here, when they are known.

A book of condolences is in the Secretary/Registrar's office (Room 43 on the front corridor, Keppel Street) for those wishing to write a personal message. For those unable to sign the book, messages can be sent to cfc@lshtm.ac.uk . These will be added to the book before it is passed to Jill Curtis and family.

Over the next few weeks we hope to put some of these expressions of appreciation on this web site . If you are happy to share your message with others in this way, please include the word “open” in the subject line. Please also let us know how you would like your name/title/institution to appear, and whether you would like your email address included.

From LSHTM's Director, Professor Sir Andrew Haines:

Chris was one of the world's leading medical entomologists. He made enormous contributions to the science and application of vector control and his pioneering studies have laid the foundation for many of the current approaches to controlling malaria. Equally importantly, he was a tireless educator who has inspired generations of students all over the world.

During Chris's short illness, messages of goodwill have been flooding in from colleagues and students all over the world. The huge volume of these messages, and the depth of feeling that they express, shows that there is a remarkably large community of people, scattered over the world, whose work and lives have been given lasting inspiration by Chris's gentleness, integrity, generosity and commitment.

Our thoughts are with Jill and his family at this time.
