Professor Martin McKee wins 11th Stampar Medal

PRESS RELEASE - Monday 22 September 2003The London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine’s Professor Martin McKee has been awarded the 11th Stampar Medal in recognition of his achievements in promoting public health education across Europe. Martin McKee is Professor of European Public Health at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine where he manages a research programme focused on health and health policy in Europe, in particular central and eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union. He is Co-Director of the European Centre on Health of Societies in Transition (ECOHOST), a World Health Organisation Collaborating Centre specialising in health and health care in the countries of central and eastern Europe, as well as editor-in-chief of the European Journal of Public Health. The medal is awarded by the Association of Schools of Public Health in the European Region (ASPHER) and is named after Dr Andrija Stampar from Croatia who was involved in the establishment of the the World Health Organisation and who later became chairman of the first WHO General Assembly in 1948. Past recipients of the medal include Professor Ilona Kickbusch of Yale University, Sir Richard Doll, Professor Charles Merieux, and Dr Hafdan Mahler.
