Study Facilities
The Library provides valuable study space for students, and a quiet space for staff to pursue their research, prepare for teaching and undertake administrative tasks, with the advantage of easy access to both Library material and Library staff. There is wireless access throughout the Library, and a laptop loan scheme and photocopying & printing facilities are also available.
Please note that mobile phones and other devices must be switched to silent and that phone conversations are not permitted anywhere within the Library, including the Enquiries Desk area. Food and drink (other than bottled water) may not be consumed in the Library. All staff, students and visitors are asked to consider the needs of their fellow Library users when using the facilities.
Reading Room
The Reading Room in the Library (located on the first floor of the Keppel Street building, accessible via the main staircase and lift) provides 36 traditional reading desks, 2 of which are height adjustable. 6 study carrels are available in the Reading Room where users can plug their laptop into the mains power supply. Users are asked not to plug laptops in to power points elsewhere in the Library, as trailing leads can cause unnecessary accidents. There are also 7 carrels containing fixed PCs, 2 of which are equipped with large monitors, where members of the School can log onto the School network, and one further carrel containing a book magnifier, which can be used to enlarge the text of printed books and journals for reading. Individual magnifier sheets are also available from the Enquiries Desk. 5 armchairs in the windows enable users to read and contemplate in a more relaxed manner – very popular just after lunch!
Barnard Room
The Barnard Room at the west end of the Library provides 24 study carrels where students can work in a slightly more enclosed environment. Again, users can plug their laptop into the mains power supply in these carrels.
e-library
The e-library (located on the ground floor of the Keppel St building, opposite the Manson Lecture Theatre) provides 11 fixed PCs, and is the venue for drop-in sessions and information skills classes for small groups provided by the Library. When not in use for training, the e-library is available for staff and students to use. The e-library can also be booked by staff for classes etc – email library@lshtm.ac.uk to make a booking.
Archives Research Room
The Archives Research Room is usually reserved for researchers using material from the rare book or archive collections, but is also available for use by disabled or dyslexic students who find the Reading Room or other areas of the Library not conducive to studying. 4 seats arranged around a study table are available. Please contact David Archer, Reader Services Librarian, if this facility would be of use to you. You may also wish to refer to our information on help for disabled/dyslexic users.
