Information for Disabled and Dyslexic Users

General information

The Library is committed to making its collections and services accessible to all users with a genuine research interest. Library staff will offer practical support to any user with a specific need or disability. Extended services and assistive technology are available for those who require it. The Library is actively pursuing both short term and long term projects to further improve access to its collections and services.

Library access and layout

The Library is based in the School’s Keppel Street Building, which is accessible by steps and a ramp from Keppel Street (both with handrails).

Study desks and carrels are located on the main level (the first floor).  Printed journals and books are located on both levels of the Library, with the most recent material kept on the main level (the first floor). Photocopiers and a printer are located on the main level (the first floor).

The Enquiries Desk is on the main level (first floor), just to the right as you enter the Library.

For information about what is located on each level of the Library, please consult the Plan of the Library. More details regarding access and layout of the Library, including dimensions, is available here.

Fetching service

If the shelves are difficult for you to access we can fetch books and journals for you. Please ask at the Enquiries Desk, telephone 020 7927 2276 or email library@lshtm.ac.uk.

Photocopying and printing service

If the photocopiers or printer are difficult for you to access or use we can photocopy or print materials for you. Photocopies and print outs cannot be made on a while you wait basis, but will be made available for you as quickly as possible. Please ask at the Enquiries Desk, telephone 020 7927 2276 or email library@lshtm.ac.uk.

Extended loans

We offer extended loans to users who have registered for this service with the Reader Services Librarian. This enables you to borrow standard and one week loan material for extended periods.

Unfortunately we cannot offer extended loans on overnight loan or reference items. If you need to consult these for longer periods of time, please contact the Reader Services Librarian.

Postal loans

We offer postal loans to users who have registered for this service with the Reader Services Librarian. This enables you to have standard and one week loan material or photocopies of material posted to your home address. The service is offered free of charge, but users are responsible for paying the postage costs of returning loan items to us.

Additional Study facilities

The Archive Research Room is available on request to users in need of a quiet or separate study space. Consideration will be given to other users of this facility when arranging access to the room. Please ask at the Enquiries Desk, telephone 020 7927 2276 or email library@lshtm.ac.uk.

Assistive technology

Assistive technology is available via IT Services.

Specialist equipment

Two of the seven workstations in the Reading Room are equipped with large screen monitors. A desktop book magnifier is located in the Reading Room, and hand-held page-size magnifier sheets are available from the Enquiries Desk for use in the Library. Two adjustable study desks are located in the Reading Room. A portable induction loop is available at the Enquiries Desk.

Safety and evacuation procedures

The emergency alarm is a continuous ringing bell. There are no visual alarms. The SCY lift may be used in an emergency. If you are unable to evacuate via the SCY lift or stairs you will be directed to a landing to wait for assistance.

If you are a member of the School and your disability may delay your recognition of or response to the fire alarm, please contact Michael Smith, Safety Officer, to discuss a personal emergency evacuation plan (PEEP).

Contacts

Disabled and dyslexic Library users are encouraged to contact David Archer, Reader Services Librarian, to discuss their needs regarding use of the Library
