Joining the Library
All current staff and students of LSHTM may join the Library and borrow material. Members of the LSHTM Alumni Association and certain categories of visitor may also register as an External Member.
LSHTM staff
To join the Library members of School staff must complete an Application for Staff Membership form and return this to the Library along with proof of their current contract (current School ID Card). A barcode is added to the School ID Card, which then acts as the Library Card. Staff membership is granted for 3 years, or until the expiry of contract, whichever is the shorter.
LSHTM Members may borrow items from the printed collections, access e-resources, and may also apply for a SCONUL Access card which can be used to join other libraries. For more information on borrowing please refer to our information on Borrowing, renewing & reserving Library material.
LSHTM students
Current London-based students are normally registered automatically with the Library at the beginning of their studies. A barcode on the School ID Card enables it to also act as a Library Card. Current distance learning students who wish to join the Library must first contact the LSHTM DL Office. DL students will be asked to supply a scan of their passport and a digital photograph of themselves, and a completed Application for DL Student Membership form. A DL ID Card with a barcode on the back, which then acts as the Library Card, will then be supplied. Student membership is granted for 1 year, or for 5 years if a DL student.

LSHTM alumni and visitors
Members of the LSHTM Alumni Association and current staff and students from other UK institutions who are in possession of a valid SCONUL Access card may apply to join LSHTM Library as an External Member. Staff and research degree students from M25 Consortium institutions may also apply. Applicants for external membership must complete an Application for External Membership form and return this with a passport-sized photograph to the Library Enquiries Desk in person. Applicants will need to present a letter of introduction from the LSHTM Alumni Association, a SCONUL Access card or an M25 card as appropriate. Proof of home address (Alumni applicants) or institutional ID card (SCONUL or M25 applicants) is also required. External Members are issued with an orange card bearing a barcode, which then acts as the Library Card. External membership is granted for 1 year, or until the expiry of the SCONUL Access or M25 card, whichever is the shorter.
External Members may borrow items from the general printed collections, but may not borrow print material from the reference or overnight loan collections, use Library laptops and computer facilities, or access electronic resources other than the Library Catalogue (including electronic journals, databases, internet and email).
