Joining the Library
LSHTM staff and students
Current staff and students at LSHTM may join the Library. LSHTM members can:
- Borrow from the Library.
- Access Electronic Resources on and off site.
- Apply at the Library Enquiries Desk for a form allowing you to join Senate House Library.
- Apply online for membership of SCONUL Access which allows you to join other libraries in the UK.
Registration for students
London-based students will be registered automatically. The barcode on your School ID card is also your Library User ID.
London-based student membership of the Library is granted for 1 year, or for the duration of the course, whichever is the shorter.
DL students must contact the DL Office to obtain a School ID card and be registered for the Library. The barcode on your School ID card is also your Library User ID. You will need to supply:
- A completed Application for DL Student Membership form.
- A scan of your passport.
- A digital photograph of yourself.
DL student membership of the Library is granted for 5 years, or for the duration of the course, whichever is the shorter.
Registration for staff
Staff must register at the Enquiries Desk. A barcode will be added to the back of your School ID card which is your Library User ID. You will need to supply:
- A completed Application for Staff Membership form.
- A School ID Card which includes a photo.
Staff membership of the Library is granted for 3 years, or until the expiry of contract, whichever is the shorter.
External members
Members of the LSHTM Alumni Association and current staff and students from other UK institutions who are members of SCONUL Access or the M25 Access & Borrowing Scheme and who wish to borrow material from the collections and/or access a limited set of electronic resources as a walk-in user may apply to join LSHTM Library as an External Member. External members can:
- Borrow from the Library.
- Access a limited set of electronic resources via the Walk-in Access service.
Please note that External members cannot:
- Borrow material from the Reference or Overnight Loan Collections or Library laptops and locks.
- Use LSHTM computer facilities or access electronic resources other than the Library Catalogue and the limited set of electronic resources available via the Walk-in Access service.
Registration for external members
LSHTM Alumni must register at the Enquiries Desk. An External Member card will be issued to you with a barcode, which is your Library User ID. You will need to supply:
- A completed Application for External Membership form.
- A letter of introduction from the LSHTM Alumni Association.
- Proof of home address.
External membership for LSHTM Alumni is granted for 1 year.
SCONUL Access members must register at the Enquiries Desk. An External Member card will be issued to you with a barcode, which is your Library User ID. You will need to supply:
- A completed Application for External Membership form.
- A copy of the email containing details of your SCONUL Access membership, or valid SCONUL Access card.
- Institutional ID.
External membership for SCONUL Access members is granted for 1 year, or until the expiry of the SCONUL Access membership, whichever is the shorter.
M25 Access & Borrowing card holders must register at the Enquiries Desk. An External Member card will be issued to you with a barcode, which is your Library User ID. You will need to supply:
- A completed Application for External Membership form.
- A M25 Access & Borrowing card.
- Institutional ID.
External membership for M25 Access & Borrowing card holders is granted for 1 year, or until the expiry of the M25 Access & Borrowing card, whichever is the shorter.
Walk-in Access members
Visitors who are not eligible for External Membership but who wish to access a limited set of electronic resources as a walk-in user may apply to join LSHTM Library as a Walk-in Access Member. Walk-in Access members can:
- Access a limited set of electronic resources via the Walk-in Access service.
Please note that Walk-in Access members cannot:
- Borrow material from the Reference or Overnight Loan Collections or Library laptops and locks.
- Use LSHTM computer facilities or access electronic resources other than the Library Catalogue and the limited set of electronic resources available via the Walk-in Access service.
Registration for walk-in access members
All walk-in access users must register at the Enquiries Desk. A Walk-in Access Member card will be issued to you with a barcode, which is your Library User ID. You will need to supply:
- A completed Application for Walk-in Access Membership form.
- Proof of home address and/or institutional ID.
Walk-in access membership is granted for 1 year, or until the expiry of the institutional ID card, whichever is the shorter.
