Finding impact factors, H-indexes and other bibliometric data

What are bibliometrics?

Bibliometrics enompass a number of statistical measures derived from citations of papers. They are commonly used as a measure of academic impact, however they should not be used in isolation.

How do I find bibliometric data?

The Library provides access to two sources for bibliographic data: ISI Web of Science/Journal Citation Reports and Google Scholar. All current staff and students have access to these ISI resources, login using your School network username and password (DL students use your UoL Portal login details).

Where can I find more help?

A group of Irish academics and librarians have put together an excellent series of tutorials on maximising your research impact. They include tutorials and explanations for each of the main bibliometrics. The tutorials are freely available under a creative commons licence at www.ndlr.ie/myri/.

Help and training on finding and using bibliometrics is also available from Jane Falconer (jane.falconer@lshtm.ac.uk).

InCites

The School has purchased a subscription to InCites (http://incites.isiknowledge.com). This is an advanced bibliometric analysis tool from ISI. Access is only available to Heads of Faculty, Heads of Departments and members of the REF Group. Jane Falconer (jane.falconer@lshtm.ac.uk) can provide you with a login if needed, plus training and support in using the data.

A short guide to InCites is also available.
