Membership of the Library

  • In addition to current students, staff and Alumni, the Library also welcomes members of the SCONUL Access and M25 schemes and any other visitors who wish to use our specialist print collections. Due to space limitations we are unable to admit visitors who wish to use the Library for study space only.

    Please select the appropriate tab above for further information about how to join the Library, and consult the Library’s ‘Regulations for Users’ before joining.

     

  • Current LSHTM Students

    London-based Students

    - London-based students are registered automatically. The barcode on your School ID card is also your Library User ID.

    - Membership is for 1 year, or for the duration of the course, whichever is shorter.

    Distance-Learning Students

    - DL students must contact their course administrator to set up a library account. The course administrator will notify the Library and Reception. On your first visit to the School you will need to ask at Reception for a School ID card. The barcode on your School ID card will be your Library User ID.

    - Email the following to your DL course administrator:

            1. Completed Application for DL Student Membership

            2. Scan of your passport

            3. Digital photo of yourself

    - Membership is for 5 years, or for the duration of the course, whichever is shorter.

  • Current LSHTM Staff

    - Staff are registered automatically.

    - Staff wishing to borrow an item from the Library must visit the Library Enquiries Desk to receive a Library User ID barcode which will be added to the back of your School ID card. You will need to supply a School ID Card which includes a photo.

    - Membership is for 1 academic year, or for the duration of the contract, whichever is shorter. Membership for current staff is renewed automatically at the end of each academic year.

  • External Members

    Members of the LSHTM School Alumni Association and current staff and students from other UK institutions who are members of SCONUL Access (bands A, B, C) or the M25 Access & Borrowing Scheme may apply to join the Library as an External Member.

    External members can:

    - Borrow up to 5 items from the Library (not including materials from the Reference or Overnight Loan collections, laptops or locks).

    Joining the Library as an External Member

    - On your first visit to the Library you will need to complete an application form.

       Alumni must bring:

            1. A letter of introduction from the LSHTM Alumni Office.

            2. Photo ID.

       SCONUL Access members must also bring:

            1. SCONUL Access membership email, or valid SCONUL card.

            2. Institutional ID.

       M25 Access & Borrowing card holders must also bring:

            1. M25 Access & Borrowing card.

            2. Institutional ID.

     

    - On each subsequent visit you will need to bring your External Membership card and sign-in at the Enquiries Desk.

    - Non-refundable, one day, photocopying cards are available from the Enquiries Desk for £1.

    - External Membership is granted for 1 year, or until the expiry of the SCONUL Access or M25 Access membership, whichever is shorter.

     

    Accessing electronic resources

    External Members can access a limited set of electronic resources when they are in the Library on a ‘walk-in’ basis. Walk-in access laptops are available on a first-come, first-served basis. If you wish to download a resource, please bring a USB.

    Terms and Conditions of use:

    You may:

    - Access a limited list of electronic resources.

    - Download to USB, single copies of articles and other electronic publications for your own personal non-commercial use.

     

    You may not:

    - Use LSHTM computer facilities.

    - Access electronic resources other than the Library Catalogue and the limited set of electronic resources available via the Walk-in Access service.

    - Use the laptop for any other purpose other than to access the resources in the walk-in scheme.

    - Pass a downloaded resource to another person.

    Users of electronic resources must comply with the license terms and conditions, including copyright restrictions, of any e-resources accessed using the walk-in scheme.

     

     

     

  • Walk-in Visitors

    Visitors and SCONUL Access Reference users are welcome to register as ‘Walk-in visitors’ to use the Library during visitor opening hours to gain reference access to our specialist print collections. We are unable to admit visitors who wish to use the Library for study space only.

     

    Registering to visit the Library

    - On your first visit to the Library you will need to complete an application form. Please bring an institutional ID card and/or photographic ID. SCONUL Access Reference users should bring their institutional ID card and SCONUL Access confirmation email.

    - On each subsequent visit you will need to bring your ‘Walk-in Visitor’ card and to sign-in at the Enquiries Desk.

    - Non-refundable, one day, photocopying cards are available from the Enquiries Desk for £1.

    - Visitor registration is granted for 1 year, or until the expiry of the SCONUL Access Reference, whichever is shorter.
