Guidelines for the use of Electronic Journals

Use of electronic journals is defined by the terms of use set out by publishers, often through individual site licences. Only authorised users are permitted access to the licensed material. A summary of the common terms of use is given below.

  • Permitted Uses Members of the School* may:
    • Search, view, retrieve and display the licensed material
    • Electronically save parts of the licensed material for personal use
    • Print single copies of parts of the licensed material for personal use
  • Prohibited Uses Members of the School* may not:
    • Provide, by electronic means, a copy of any part of the licensed material to non-members
    • Incorporate all or any part of the licensed material in course packs or electronic reserve collections without the prior written permission of the publisher
    • Remove or alter the authors' names or the publishers' copyright notices or other means of identification or disclaimers as they appear on the licensed material
    • Systematically make print or electronic copies of multiple extracts of the licensed material for any purpose
    • Mount or distribute any part of the licensed material on any electronic network, including without limitation the Internet and the World Wide Web, other than the secure School network
  • Permissions The publishers' explicit written permission must be obtained in order to:
    • Use the licensed material for any commercial purpose
    • Systematically distribute the whole or any part of the licensed material to anyone other than members of the School
    • Publish, distribute or make available the licensed material, works based on the licensed material or works which combine them with any other material
    • Alter, abridge, adapt or modify the licensed material, except to the extent necessary to make it viewable on a computer screen to members of the School. For the avoidance of doubt, no alteration of the words or their order is permitted.

All members of the School using electronic journals are required to abide by these terms - failure to do so may result in the withdrawal of the user's access to the service, or of the service itself.

* A member of the School is defined as someone currently registered as a student of the School, holding a current contract of employment with the School, or temporarily working at the School on an official attachment to a specific faculty/division or department.
