Email on mobile phones
Novell Data Synchronizer
Introduction
The Novell Data Synchronizer service allows you to send and receive email on your mobile phone or other mobile device.
The service allows staff and students to receive real-time email, calendar and contacts on their mobile devices; the system supports many popular device operating systems, including Android, Apple (iPhones, etc), Maemo, Palm, Symbian, and Windows Mobile.
To use the system please contact IT Services on extension x5000, or send an email to itshelpdesk@lshtm.ac.uk - stating your username, and for reference what device(s) you will be using.
Once you have been registered you will be able to connect your device. Please note that Novell Data Synchronizer requires a data connection from you mobile device, so be aware that if you do not have an unrestricted data service for your device you may be charged according to your data usage.
Important: Also be aware that if you travel abroad with the Synchronizer system active you may be charged significantly for data usage whilst roaming.
If you are inside the School then you can also connect via the School’s wireless service (for details see of coverage and setup please see www.lshtm.ac.uk/its/wireless)
Setup
In your phone or mobile device you will need to add a mail account for 'Microsoft Activesync' (or similar, according to the model/make you have, for instance a 'Microsoft Exchange' entry). The details you may be asked for will be:
- email address
- username (use the regular School network one)
- password (use the regular School network one)
- domain - you may be asked for this and it should be left blank
- Server - ndsync.lshtm.ac.uk (for Staff and RD students)
- Server - gw-sync.lshtm.ac.uk (for MSc students)
Once you have connected you may be asked what you want to sync - for instance, mail, tasks, calendar, contacts.
By default, no personal address books in GroupWise are synchronized, if you want to have you frequent contacts or other address books included then see the Changing your Settings section below.
By default, two weeks of past calendar items and all future calendar items are automatically synchronized to your mobile device.
By default, three days of past e-mail messages are synchronized from your GroupWise Mailbox folder to the In-Box folder on your mobile device. If you want to synchronize more existing e-mail messages to the In-Box, change the e-mail settings on your mobile device. GroupWise items in Cabinet folders synchronize later, when you open each folder on your mobile device.
