New Students Information
Full Network Access
Full network access will be available from 12.30 on Wednesday, 29 September. The ‘Getting Started’ booklet has all the details you need to log on to the network and find resources. Please go to Rooms LG2 or LG31 (Keppel Street building lower ground floor) to log on for the first time between 12.30 on 29 September and 17.00 on 1 October.
Wireless Access
Wireless network access is available from Thursday, 30 September for users throughout School buildings, including Keppel Street and 15-17 Tavistock Place. You can follow the instructions at http://www.lshtm.ac.uk/its/wireless/ to help you set up your laptop, smartphone or tablet to connect to the wireless network.
Please note, you should have logged into the network on one of the PCs in the computer classrooms before attempting to set up wireless access.
Where to Get IT Information or Assistance
"Getting Started" Booklet
You should have been issued with this booklet which serves as a guide to logging on to the network, and to the various facilities and services available to you. It will be a useful point of reference throughout the year. It comes in a handy A5 format, with a tear-out form at the rear for signing up for ‘Introduction to Computing’.
'Introduction to Computing'
This is an optional course which runs for four weeks at the start of the autumn term. You should sign up for this if you are fairly new to computing and the Microsoft Office applications, as it will teach you the basics.Computing Advisory Service
The Computing Advisory Service, located in Room LG23B, Keppel Street lower ground floor, is a very valuable source of advice on a variety of computing problems, particularly software-related, or for information. They are open Monday to Friday, 11.00-14.00, 15.00-18.00. You can e-mail the advisory service at advisory@lshtm.ac.uk, or call on x.2183.
IT Services Helpdesk
Open Monday to Friday, 08.30-17.30, in Room LG1 (Keppel Street lower ground floor). You can e-mail the helpdesk at itshelpdesk@lshtm.ac.uk, or call on x.5000.

Available Services
E-mail Terminals
If the computer classrooms are busy, and you just need to check your e-mail, there are e-mail terminals in the common room in the Keppel St building (next to the refectory). In the same place, there is also a monitor screen which displays the number of computer terminals free in each computer classroom, useful for when teaching starts and the classrooms get busy.
Remote Network Access
If you have access to a PC, Mac or laptop outside the School, and you have a dial-up or Broadband internet connection, you can access the network remotely for library databases and your files stored on the network. Instructions on this service are available at http://www.lshtm.ac.uk/its/remote/
LSHTM Laptop Purchasing Scheme
The School offers students the opportunity to purchase Toshiba laptops at competitive prices through a University of London purchasing scheme. Flyers are available from the IT Services Helpdesk, and you can read more details and order a laptop through http://www.studentstore.co.uk/lshtm
