Role Evaluation

Role Evaluation (HERA) Overview

Role evaluation (also known as job evaluation or role analysis) is a consistent and systematic process for defining the relative size or ranking of jobs. The role evaluation score determines the grade for the role.

The school has used HERA (Higher Education Role Analysis), a system specifically developed for higher education, to facilitate the role analysis process and all existing roles have been put through the system to determine their grade on the eight-grade structure.  New roles continue to be added to the grading structure.  The aim is to grade jobs fairly and to ensure equal pay for work of equal value.

The School is committed to the principles of equal pay for work of equal value.  The grading system is therefore based upon the evaluation of the duties and responsibilities attached to the post, using the Higher Education Role Analysis (HERA) scheme, and not upon the personal merits of an individual post-holder.  The grading of posts will be undertaken by trained Role Analysts.

The use of HERA within the School

HERA is used to:

Academic roles (The Academic Pathway)

The School has used HERA to establish grades for academic roles.  Academic roles do not need to be evaluated again.  However, if a new academic role is created, the following academic role profiles and recruitment job evaluation forms are available for guidance when drawing up job descriptions and person specification for the following academic posts:

Role Review Process

Professional Support Staff Roles (Professional Support Pathway)

All new and existing Professional Support (PSP) roles will be analysed by a Grading Panel which meets every six weeks. The dates of the grading panels are available in the document Dates of HERA Grading Panels.

All new PSP roles currently graded 1-8 will go through the HERA role evaluation process.  Please refer to section 6.8 of the policy stated below for the procedure to follow for this process.

All existing PSP roles currently graded 1-8 can be reviewed via HERA role review process.  Any application for role review received after the submission deadline will be processed at the next grading panel – no exceptions will be made.

Policy on role evaluation of new PSP roles and the review of existing PSP roles can be found in the Role Evaluation & Review Policy & Procedure document.
