Safe & efficient implementation of Dengvaxia: tackling remaining challenges

Overview:

The World Health Organisation’s (WHO) Strategic Advisory Group of Expert on Immunisation recommended in July 2016 that countries should consider introduction of dengue vaccine only in national or subnational settings with a high burden of disease and to target age groups where more than 70% have been infected with dengue before.

This recommendation presents national advisory boards with an unprecedented complexity for optimal vaccine introduction. Problems that hinder informed decision making on vaccine implementation include uncertainties around appropriate disease and transmission proxies to define the target population, the spatial resolution needed for such proxies, difficulties in communication of vaccination strategies with policy makers, Health officials and the public, and the design of post implementation impact studies.

This one day Vaccine Centre meeting aims to discuss these issues among a an audience with a diversity of backgrounds and to conclude on the main barriers for vaccine implementation and study designs to overcome those.

  • Heidi Larson – Associate Professor at London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine and Director of The Vaccine Confidence Project
