Map of BWHHS Sites

This map shows the 23 towns where we recruited woman to take part in this study. The towns were chosen because they are representative of the UK population.  They are also the sites used by our partner study the long-running British Regional Heart Study.

The hearts on the map indicate the level of Coronary Heart Disease in each town, based on the data we collected in 1999/2000.

One in five women (20%) in the study had either CHD or a stroke.

Overall, 16% of the study women had CHD at baseline.

The town with the worst CHD was Merthyr Tydfil, with a rate of 23%.

Guildford had the lowest number of CHD cases, a rate of just 7.5%.

With thanks to our colleagues at the University of Bristol for the map.
