Introduction to computing in EPH
When using the network you must abide by the regulations. These can be found at http://intra.lshtm.ac.uk/reference/regs/networkregs.html
Please change your initial password to one of your own choosing the first time you log on. Passwords must be at least eight characters long and must include at least one number. The number(s) cannot be at the start or end of the password.
1. Getting Support
- The first point of contact for problems should be to mail eph-help@lshtm.ac.uk or call Extension 5200
- The external number is +44 20 7927 2515 or request a Skype Call Here
- If you have forgotten or have other password problems try http://password.lshtm.ac.uk/
2. Saving files.
- Don't use 'My Documents' or the desktop. These are prone to disappearing at random. Use the H:\ ideally. This is your home space that no-one else can see.
- There are 2 shared drives J:\ and N:\ and you'll have access to general folders and any we are told to give you access to. Other useful drives are-
- J:\transfer is for passing files around (rather than e-mailing them) this is visible to everyone and wiped weekly on Sunday;
- L:\ which is a scratch space, unique to you, and usually wiped every night. - Always keep a backup of anything on a USB drive
3. E-mail
- Your e-mail address is firstname.surname@LSHTM.ac.uk (uppercase used here only for clarity)
- We use GroupWise which you should be able to negotiate if you've used any mail system before.
- You have a quota of 300MB (This can be negotiated up). You can see the percentage you're using in at the bottom of the GroupWise window.
- Avoid global emails. If you must then subjects should be relevant: Lecture..., seminar... ,etc.
Messages should have an expiry date set (see under File/Properties) - There is a noticeboard for non-work e-mail (cats/flats to rent). To post send to #noticeboard. For the EPH only noticeboard mail EPH_Noticeboard. New users should have a mail telling you how to connect.
- To access your mail from outside the school see - http://www.lshtm.ac.uk/its/remote/email/
4. Remote Access
- It is also possible to access your files remotely see - http://www.lshtm.ac.uk/its/remote/
5. Laptops
- It is possible to connect Laptops to the network but for security reasons and to meet Network Regulations we will need to see them and set them up.
- We recommend purchasing a good laptop lock to secure your laptop to the desk
- We recommend purchasing an external hard drive for backing up your data or alternatively using Novell iFolder.
- The school uses the Academic Wireless Network Eduroam See http://www.lshtm.ac.uk/its/wireless/ or for setup instructions see http://www.lshtm.ac.uk/its/wireless/setup/
6. Training
