Staff and Educational Development Programme 2011 - 2012

Introduction by the Director

The School is committed to investing in the training and development of all its staff.  Learning, development, enhancing skills and quality, are central to progress and continuous improvement across all areas of the School.

The Staff and Educational Development (SED) Programme has grown in size, scope and popularity over the last few years and is now regarded by many, both within the School and elsewhere, as a model of good practice in this area.  It offers a strong combination of tailored courses for specific staff groups, many of these recognising initiatives and innovations in the wider Higher Education sector, and a very broad range of other courses available to all staff.  Learning together, sharing experiences and enjoying active discussion with colleagues are key aspects of the development process – it is also a great way to meet people from other Departments, Offices and Faculties!

The School’s uniquely tailored Postgraduate Certificate in Learning and Teaching (PGCILT) goes from strength to strength with more than 250 enrolments now received, mostly from lecturers and staff on research grades.  The Higher Education Academy accreditation received in December 2007 benchmarks the Certificate against national teaching standards and provides the last piece of the jigsaw so far as recognition for the Certificate is concerned.  Congratulations to those staff that have now successfully completed the module on which they were enrolled.  This shows an excellent personal commitment to the development of professional teaching skills that will benefit the School and students alike.  The Certificate is a key element of the School’s response to the UK Professional Standards Framework for Teaching and Supporting Student Learning in Higher Education (UKPSF) which the School is committed to incorporating actively in its development processes.

We recognise the need for continuous personal and professional development for post-doctoral research staff and encourage you to consider the extensive range of training options set out in the Programme.

Collaboration with other Bloomsbury Colleges is an important feature of our work and we look forward to welcoming colleagues onto many elements of the School’s SED Programme this coming year.

I hope you will find this extensive Programme meets your needs and wish you every success in pursuing the opportunities on offer.
