The School embraces and values the diversity of its staff and student population and seeks
to promote equality as an essential element in enhancing the School's contribution to the
improvement of health worldwideLSHTM Equality and Diversity Strategy
Introduction
The School’s Equality and Diversity Strategy was approved for School-wide implementation by Council on 15th March 2006. It covers all staff, students and visitors to the School and aims to provide a working, learning and social environment which is supportive and inclusive. In support of this a range of training is offered which staff and managers are required to attend. Participation is monitored by Human Resources and reported to the Equal Opportunities Committee.
A key objective of this training is to contribute to building a positive work and study environment in which staff and students can work with dignity and respect, as well as helping staff to be aware of the important legislation covering this area, and the spirit and intention of the legislation.
As in previous years, the workshops on Interview and Selection skills and Appraisal skills are mandatory for all staff who participate in interviews and/or run appraisals for staff. These have been found to be very useful by staff who have attended in the past, particularly as they focus on the skills needed for performing these vital roles.
We have also introduced a half-day workshop on Cultural Awareness that is open to any member of staff wishing to extend or challenge their knowledge and awareness in this area.
The School has invested in an e-learning package to add to and complement its portfolio of training on Equality and Diversity Awareness. Structured as two modules moving from the “essentials” through to “managing diversity” these e-learning courses will be used with new-starters as part of their induction and with other staff as may be appropriate. It is now a School requirement that all new-starters complete the first module (Equal Opportunities and Diversity Essentials) within their first two-months of engagement.
For the first time this year we are running in-house a specific workshop of Disability Awareness.
