Quality Enhancement Team

Welcome to the Quality Enhancement Team page!

Our role is to manage the School's quality assurance and enhancement activities, working closely with the Dean of Education and the Associate Dean for Quality Management & Enhancement. 

Our current agenda is focused on enhancing guidance material for staff and students and we will be running a number of projects to make these documents easy to access and as easy to digest as possible.

We all have particular projects and areas that we lead on; please do get in touch with the relevant contact if you would like to get involved.

Kate Marshall - Head of Quality Enhancement

Kate has previously worked at King's College London and Cranfield University. Her roles have included quality enhancement, development of regulations and associated processes, project management and student experience.


Key Areas of Responsibility

  • Manages the Quality Enhancement Team
  • In conjunction with the Associate Dean for Quality Management & Enhancement, plans and leads the School's quality assurance agenda, taking account of requirements from the QAA and other regulatory bodies
  • Leads on providing advice and guidance on collaborative provision
  • Secretary to Quality & Standards Committee, Senate and Senate Executive Group
  • Leading a project to redesign the Quality Enhancement web pages
  • Manages the national Postgraduate Taught Experience Survey (PTES)

Joanna Bending - Taught Courses Executive Officer

Joanna has previously worked at the University of Sheffield, Tavistock Centre for Couple Relationships and in the Distance Learning Office at the School. Her roles have included the management and delivery of academic and professional training courses and pre-sessional language courses for international students.

Key Areas of Responsibility

  • Supports the work of the Taught Course Directors/Associate Deans
  • Leading a project to review the use of Turnitin UK in relation to the detection of plagiarism within the School
  • Working on a project to review teaching allocation methods in the School, alongside the Taught Course Directors/Associate Deans
  • Secretary to the Extenuating Circumstances Committee
  • Secretary to the Teaching Management Group
  • Manages the in-house Orientation Period Evaluation

Zarah Bennett - Quality Enhancement Officer (Research)

Zarah has previously worked at Goldsmiths University, the Royal College of Psychiatrists and the Public Health Policy Faculty in the School. Her roles have included supporting students, management of recruitment processes and committee work.

Key Areas of Responsibility

  • Contact for all research degree programme enquiries for the team
  • Manages the School's Transferable Skills Programme
  • Leading a project to review and revise all guidance documents, including handbooks, relating to research degree programmes
  • Manages the national Postgraduate Research Experience Survey (PRES)
  • Working with staff in Registry and in the faculties to review regulations relating to research degree programmes
  • Leading a review of the School's practices and regulations in relation to the QAA Chapter B4 on Enabling Student Development and Achievement
  • Leading a review of the School's practices and regulations in relation to the QAA Chapter B6 on Assessment of Students and Recognition of Prior Learning
  • Secretary to the School's Research Degrees Committee

Hazel Young - Quality Enhancement Officer (Teaching)

Hazel has previously worked at Kingston University, University of the Arts London and Brunel University. Her roles have included quality enhancement, examinations, academic administration, recruitment, committee work and supporting students.

Key Areas of Responsibility

  • Contact for all taught course related enquiries for the team
  • Manages the School's periodic review process
  • Leading a project (with the Associate Dean for Student Experience and Programme Support) to review how the School engages with its students with a view to strengthening student representation and the student voice
  • Manages the in-house Distance Learning survey
  • Leading a project to produce a new handbook for MSc Projects
  • Leads on the development of the Combined Academic Risk Assessment and Ethics (CARE) form
  • Leading a review of the School's practices and regulations in relation to the QAA Chapter B3 on Learning & Teaching
  • Secretary to the School's Learning & Teaching Committee
