Abdhalah Ziraba MBChB MSc

Research Degree Student

For my first degree, I trained as medical doctor at Makerere University Medical School and had my internship placement at Jinja Regional Hospital. I was subsequently employed as a medical officer by Iganga District Local Government for about two years. I won a merit scholarship through the Ministry of Education to undertake masters training in clinical epidemiology and biostatistics at Makerere University. After the masters training I worked with the African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) in Kenya for five years- initially as a research trainee, and later as a research officer. While at APHRC I was awarded a Commonwealth scholarship through the Realising Rights Research Consortium to undertake PhD training in epidemiology and population health at London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

My research interests include maternal and child health, HIV/AIDs, urban health and health inequities, measurement issues related to causes of death and its impact -particularly in sub-Saharan Africa where vital registration is lacking.

My PhD project explores levels, trends and causes of adult deaths and its impact on child wellbeing-including survival, vaccination, schooling and living arrangements in Nairobi informal settlements.
