I am a practicing general paediatrician and public health doctor with a research interest in children's health services and systems.
I qualified in medicine at University College London in 1997, after obtaining a BSc in physiology from UCL in 1989 and working in a research laboratory until starting medical school. I trained first as a paediatrician and subsequently in public health and now divide my time between working as child public health research fellow at LSHTM and as a staff general paediatrician at Whittington hospital in London.
My main research interest is in European child health services and systems and I am leading a research project with the European Observatory on Health Systems and Policies examining children’s health services in European countries. I co-authored the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health’s reports on health services “Modelling the Future” and have spoken at national and international conferences on European child health and health services, and am co-authoring a number of papers on the subject.
I am presently working with national and local committees devising new models of health services for children in the UK, focusing particularly on building bridges between primary and secondary care. I am co-founding member of the National Collaborative for Children’s Healthcare and am their Lead for public health and research. I serve on the Healthcare for London’s advisory committee for primary and community healthcare for children which has recently launched a new model for children's health services which is being adopted across London.
