Dr Sotiris Vardoulakis BSc MSc PhD

Honorary Senior Lecturer

I am Head of the Environmental Change Department at the Centre for Radiation, Chemical & Environmental Hazards of Public Health England. I have also been Group Leader for Air Pollution and Climate Chnage, and Specialist Environmental Scientist at the same organisation.

I hold honorary academic affiliations with LSHTM, the University of Birmingham and the University of Exeter, and I am a Fellow of the Institution of Environmental Sciences, the Institute of Air Quality Management and the Higher Education Academy.

After reading Physics in the University of Athens, I gained an MSc in Environmental Technology from Imperial College London, a PhD in Air Pollution from Greenwich University, and a PGCE in Learning & Teaching in Higher Education from the University of Birmingham.

I worked as Lecturer in Environmental Exposure Assessment for Epidemiology and Risk Assessment at LSHTM from 2006 to 2010. Previously I worked at the University of Birmingham, University of Aveiro (Portugal), local government (Sussex Air Quality Partnership), consultancy (AUXIRBAT) and research (INERIS institute, France). I was Visiting Fellow at the Australian National University's National Centre for Epidemiology and Population Health from 2011 to 2012.

I lecture in the Environmental Health Policy module (MSc Public Health, Department of Social and Environmental Health Research, LSHTM) and in other university courses on city science, environmental management, air pollution control, climate change adaptation and mitigation, and public health.

My main research interests include environmental sustainability, air pollution, climate change, environmental health policy, exposure assessment, risk assessment, health impact analysis, air quality management, dispersion modelling, environmental impact assessment, and urban climatology.

In 2013 I co-founded and currently co-chair the Healthy-Polis International Consortium for Urban Environmental Health and Sustainability. I also lead the theme Healthy Sustainable Cities of the NIHR Health Protection Research Unit in Environmental Change and Health, and the Environmental Public Health Risks work package of the EU (Horizon 2020) EURO-HEALTHY project (Shaping EUROpean policies to promote HEALTH equitY).

Previously, I have participated in several national and international research projects, including the Health Effects of Climate Change in the UK 2012 (DH), the 1st UK Climate Change Risk Assessment (DEFRA), Integrated Framework for Improving Sustainability of the Indoor Environment - PURE INTRAWISE (EPSRC), Pollutants in the Urban Environment - PURE (EPSRC), Integrated Assessment of Health Risks of Environmental Stressors in Europe - INTARESE (EU, FP6), Measurement and Modelling of Exposure to Air Toxic Concentrations for Health Effect Studies - MATCH (US HEI), and Advanced Tools for Rational Energy Use towards Sustainability with emphasis on microclimatic issues in urban applications - ATREUS (EU, FP5). I am currently a co-author of the People and the Built Environment chapter of the 2nd UK Climate Change Risk Assessment.
