Research Fellow Pharmacology

Albert van Wyk is a Research Fellow in the Faculty of Infectious and Tropical Diseases, at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, London, UK. He obtained both his BSc and PhD at Rhodes University in Grahamstown, South Africa in the field of synthetic organic chemistry. Originally, his research centred on the semisynthesis of compounds with antifungal, anticancer and antimalarial properties from naturally occurring metabolites. As an extension of this research, he then moved to the National Cancer Institute (NCI) in Frederick, Maryland, USA where he worked on the bioassay guided isolation and characterisation of bioactive metabolites from marine, terrestrial and fungal sources. While at the NCI, he also played a role in optimizing and adapting a protein based assay anticancer assay to a high throughput format.
