Hugh Sturrock BSc MSc PhD

Research Fellow

I completed my first degree in Zoology at Edinburgh University in 2005, basing my Honours project on the fungal control of mosquitoes. In 2006 I carried out a Masters at the University of Otago, looking at the epidemiology of avian malaria in yellow-eyed penguins. My PhD looked at the spatial epidemiology of Neglected Tropical Diseases and malaria and optimal survey designs.

Teaching

I am deputy course organiser for distance learning course Control of Infectious Diseases and am a facilitator for Spatial Epidemiology in Public Health and Analysis and Design of Research Studies.

Research

I am interested in the variations in spatial heterogeneity between diseases and how this affects the design of surveys and control strategies. This involves using a combination of statistical modelling, spatial analysis and computer simulations.

I am also involved in ongoing projects with the Global Atlas of Helminth Infections, most recently compiling and mapping lymphatic filariasis prevalence and drug coverage data.
