Pre-eclampsia remains one of the most important causes of maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality worldwide, and yet the little we know about its aetiology has limited the development of effective prognostic and therapeutic strategies.

For my PhD studies, I aim to assess the possible causal effect of a number of biochemical markers on pre-eclampsia by means of Mendelian randomisation analyses using relevant genetic variants as instrumental variables. To do so, I will use biological information from more than 4000 Colombian women in the GenPE case-control study (www.genpe.org) and data from a genome-wide association study performed on the same samples as part of the Wellcome Trust Case-Control Consortium 2 (WTCCC2).
