Jenny Smith BSc MSc

Research Fellow

After completion of my first degree in Human Biology at the University of California, San Diego in 2007, I earned an MSc in Epidemiology at LSHTM in 2008.

Following my studies, I worked as a research assistant at LSHTM to support the development of the Global Atlas of Helminth Infection (GAHI) and quantify the impact of deworming on anaemia. Recent work has included development of The Global Atlas of Trachoma in collaboration with the International Trachoma Initiative. This open-access online resource on the geographical distribution of trachoma was launched in early 2011 with the aim of supporting all partners working towards the global elimination of trachoma as a public helth problem.

Current research activities focus on using the spatial epidemiology of trachoma to inform estimates for the 2010 Global Burden of Disease study and, in the context of my PhD, explore implications for programme planning and control decisions.

Teaching

I am a facilitator for Spatial Epidemiology in Public Health, Analysis and Design of Research Studies and Applying Public Health Priciples in Developing Countries.

Research

My research interests lie in the epidemiology of infectious disease, with an emphasis on how research can best be used to inform evidence-based control. In particular, I have an interest in the spatial epidemiology of Neglected Tropical Diseases and using risk mapping as a tool to inform survey design and control decisions in resource constrained settings.
