Pieter Smit MSc

Research Degree Student

Pieter is a PhD student interested in developing and applying new diagnostic methodologies for detecting STIs. He attended Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam for both his BSc in biomedical sciences and MSc in medical sciences with a focus on parasitology and international public health. Since 2008 he has worked as a laboratory technical consultant for a molecular biology laboratory in The Netherlands and has also participated in developing and implementing novel STI related diagnostic methods.

Research

His research focuses on the surveillance and causes of fever in children. He is involved in studies in Peru, Laos, Tanzania as well as The Netherlands. The goal of his research is to develop an easily implemented surveillance system for febrile illness using dried blood spots and real-time PCR. Additionally, he is looking into developing a quality assurance method for rapid diagnostic tests. He is funded in part by The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and UBSOF.
