Mihretab Salasibew BSc MPH IBCLC

Research Degree Student

Studied my first degree in Ethiopia in Alemaya University and graduated in 2002 with BSc degree in public health. I have worked for 4 years in Ethiopia with national and international NGos where I managed large scale projects in maternal and child health, HIV/AIDS and adolescent reproductive health. My roles included project proposal development, monitoring and evaluation, managing project finances and clinical practices in health centers and clinics.

In 2006, I studied masters degree in public health from Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine and conducted a study in Pakistan in breastfeeding area as part of my masters study. In 2008, I became an IBCLC (International Board Certified Lactation Consultant)after passing the international exam for qualified breastfeeding counsellors administered by http://www.iblce.org/. Since 2007, I have been working in the UK on different NHS-funded small projects targeted at ethinic minorities in London.

From January 2011, I am studying PhD at LSHTM and the focus of my research is on breastfeeding measurement. I will be comparing breastfeeding surveys in sub-Saharan African countries in the text descriprtion or wording of survey questions, choice of indicators (early initiation and exclusive breastfeeding) and interpretation of breastfeeding coverage figures. I will also be conducting qualitative survey in Ethiopia to explore how mothers perceive the recommended breastfeeding survey questions. Findings from the study will inform future practice in breastfeeding measurement whether existing survey tools are relevant and adequately capture actual breastfeeding practices.
