Dr Lucy Reynolds BSc AKC ACA ATII MSc DrPH DLSHTM

Research Fellow

Since 1995 I have worked in the design and management of medical and public health programmes in developing and transition countries in Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe and the Caribbean, with a particular focus on public health in China. Since returning to the UK I have worked also on UK health care financing issues.

I have also gained extensive experience on HIV/AIDS.  This included design and set up of the first peer education programme for injecting drug users in detention and in the community in China, the first low-cost antiretroviral treatment programme in China, and facilitation of the creation of a psychosocial support group for ex-IDUs and other prople living with HIV in Kunming, Yunnan.  In Haiti I was involved in managing several  programmes offering antiretroviral treatment and prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV, and designed two programmes to meet the needs of orphans and children affected by HIV. I carried out extended epidemiological field assessments to inform HIV programming in China (Yunnan, Henan, Xinjiang and Shanxi provinces), Indonesia and Haiti.

I work currently on the epidemiology and the social impact of HIV and AIDS, including research and consultancy on stigma and on the control of infectious disease.

Teaching

I am the Course Director for the Faculty of Public Health and Policy on the MSc in Control of Infectious Diseases.

Teaching includes seminars on the Introduction to Health Economics, Health Services, Health Care Evaluation and Economic Evaluation modules in the School's main MSc teaching programme.  I also lecture on the Principles and Practice of Public Health module.

I tutor on the HIV/AIDS and the Hospital Infections courses on the MSc Infectious Diseases distance learning programme, and on the Financial Management of Health Services, Basic Epidemiology, Economics of Global Health and the Health Promotion courses for the LSHTM distance learning MSc in Public Health.  This year I will be organising the Globalisation and Health module for the latter.

I work as Project Supervisor for several MSc students researching practical issues associated with infection control and of disease-related stigma. Past projects that I have supervised include a study of prevention of mother to child transmission of HIV and traditional belief systems in Guinea-Bissau, a study of the effectiveness of antiretroviral adherence counselling in Honduras, a feasibility study for the scale-up of home-based care of patienst with antibiotic-resistant TB in Uganda, and a study of the reasons for high mortality from sepsis in Zanzibar.

Research

My research interests relate to the way in which healthcare system structure, financing and health outcomes interact, and to the interaction of disease-related stigma with health care delivery.

I'm trained in research skills for molecular biology, qualitative and quantitative techniques for social science (particularly RAR), and in financial & economic analysis. I completed my doctorate in Public Health at LSHTM in 2007.  This multidisciplinary background supports an integrated approach to understanding and addressing public health problems.
