Senior Lecturer in Genetic Epidemiology

I trained in medicine at St. Andrews and Manchester and have been at the school since 1998. I am currently also working as a GP in South London.

Teaching

I am involved with MSc teaching in genetic epidemiology, statistics and epidemiology. I also teach 2 PhD students. I am an accredited member of the ILT (Institute for Learning and Teaching) and a GP appraiser.

Research

My interests include genetic epidemiology of complex traits including hypertension and systemic lupus erythematosus in admixed African/European populations (in Trinidad & Tobago). The group has received funding from the Medical Research Council and the Arthritis Research Campaign, and fieldwork and genotyping for these studies has now been completed, with analyses underway. Novel work includes quantification of admixture in diverse populations using the program ADMIXMAP. Other areas of research relate to pharmaco-epidemiology of adverse drug reactions, and include the EUDRAGENE project: European case-control collection of genetic susceptibility to adverse drug reactions www.EUDRAGENE.org I recently completed a personal award from the NCCRCD to study signal detection for adverse drug reactions (ADRs). THis work is complementing part of a European FP7 project led by colleagues in the Netherlands. Genetic studies of susceptibility to ADRs are currently underway in 2010 as part of an international consortium. In 2011 together with collaborators, GWAS have been published on hypersensititivy reactions.

EUDRAGENE is involved with the following initiatives concerning adverse drug reactions:
